Get Set’s Road to Rio

Background

Get Set is the official youth engagement programme of the British Olympic Association and the British Paralympic Association. Originally created as the official London 2012 education programme, Get Set uses the Olympic and Paralympic Movements to help inspire young people aged 5—19 to get active and live the Olympic and Paralympic Values. Supported by Spirit of 2012, Get Set launched its Road to Rio in 2014 which included a mobile app enabling young people to work in teams and turn physical activity into kilometres, virtually travelling the 9,289 km to Rio. Get Set also launched the Values Awards: interactive, online courses encouraging young people to develop key life skills, character and resilience through exploring the Olympic and Paralympic Values.

Why is it innovative?

  • EdComs came on board in 2013 to help build on the success of the 2012 programme. We were challenged to inspire both existing and new schools through the Olympic and Paralympic Movements.
  • EdComs created a series of inspirational and educational opportunities for young people, which used the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games as a hook.
  • The programme aimed to combine cutting-edge digital technology with the inspiration of the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games to:
    • inspire young people to participate in sport and physical activity.
    • inspire social change by using role models and inspirational stories to raise the aspirations of young people.
    • help young people to develop positive values-led leadership skills.
    • challenge the perceptions of disability by creating and celebrating disabled role models, including Paralympians.
  • EdComs was also challenged to build Get Set into an umbrella brand, finding opportunities for commercial partners to come on board and create their own Get Set programmes addressing similar aims.

How does it inspire learning?

  • EdComs created resources to give schools opportunities to get involved in Get Set’s Road to Rio across the curriculum and to connect to the excitement of Rio.
  • Get Set provided schools with exclusive images and information, as well as access to Team GB and ParalympicsGB athletes via school visits and Google Hangouts.
  • Learning about the Olympic and Paralympic Values is consistently the top reason for teachers to interact with the programme.

Resource highlights include:

  • A brand new responsive website, with AA accreditation from AbilityNet.
  • Combining physical activity and technology with the Road to Rio mobile app.
  • Online interactive learning opportunities through the Values Awards.
  • Assembly resources to support whole-school engagement and lesson materials to support subjects across the curriculum.
  • Support for teachers in embedding the Olympic and Paralympic Values across their school.

Outcomes:

  • Road to Rio has won EVCOM Live Awards for Brand Experience (Silver) and Education and Training (Bronze), and EVCOM Clarion Awards for Innovation (Silver) and Celebratory (Bronze) in 2016.
  • Across its lifetime, Get Set has engaged over 80% of schools. The Road to Rio programme has continued to inspire young people across the country.
  • Using Get Set’s programmes has encouraged uptake of a wider range of sports and activities, and more young people to take part in sport in general.
